John Marzulli, CR, CKBR, owner of Emerald
Contractors, has never been shy to speak his
mind. His experience as a business owner in the
remodeling industry has given him a different
perspective when it comes to today’s economy.
“I’m a glass is always half full kind of guy, but
don’t mistake my exuberance for unreality,” he says.
Marzulli believes people need to stimulate
their own economies by making wise investments
now. He describes wise investments as things that
improve your future and well-being.
For example, remodeling your home is a
wise investment, or at least that’s what Marzulli
tells his clients.
Marzulli believes behind every recession is
an opportunity to make money in a different
way. “Even with 10 percent unemployment rate,
90 percent of us still have jobs, and I need to find
a way to tap into that group and make profit,”
Marzulli says. The key he says is to be creative.
Bankers and real estate agents are two
groups that Marzulli would like to work with
because he believes they will need remodelers to
finish or update homes to facilitate sales.
“I am shifting my focus and goals by looking
at new targets and making new alliances with
trade partners,
suppliers and
designers to refer
business to each
other,” Marzulli
says.
As an
entrepreneur,
Marzulli considers
it his job to find opportunities in all types of
economies and not allow himself to be consumed
with things he cannot control.
“We cannot control the greed that overtook
the financial markets, but I can control how I view
the events around me and who I invest in,” he says.
Marzulli shares his wealth with people in his
circle of influence, such as vendors. He recently
had painting and repairs made to his own house,
all done by subcontractors he works with
regularly.
This “realistic optimism” as Marzulli calls it, is
expressed in a quarterly e-newsletter, reaching
nearly 1,000 people, including past and present
clients, colleagues and business leaders in the
community.
Most important, through his newsletter and
working relationships, people view him to be
passionate about his service to clients and honest
in telling people when he cannot do something.
“I always under-promise and over-deliver,”
Marzulli says.
And of course, these people see his ever-
present optimism that motivates him to find
opportunity in any situation. –Morgan Zenner
