These homeowners wanted to access
the new full basement entertainment
center from the front door, so when
space for a basement was excavated,
there was also space designated for a
stair tower entrance to house a circular
floating staircase.
The stairs were made using a series of
rigid boxes connected by large dovetail
joints. The whole staircase floats with
minimal attachment to the walls. Glass
plates extend the tread on the stairs to
the wall surfaces as a safety feature
When the stairs were first installed,
there was not enough height where the
stairs passed under the first floor. The
solution was to remove the tread and
lower the stairs one rise to shorten the
stairs by one tread.
