This old house in the Old Town district of San Diego was to
become a music studio and retail space, and the owners wanted
to retain the original look of craftsman cottage with Victorian
influences.
A new turret and front entrance were created to be the visual
focus on the structure. The whole building had to be raised and
removed to replace the foundation.
Energy-efficient insulation, energy-efficient windows and
energy-efficient heating and air conditioning units were used.
The floor was unsalvageable, so acoustically beneficial hardwood
floors were added throughout.

This retreat center had the opportunity to turn a room into a
dedicated library. Attention to detail was everything on this
project. Knotty alder was used to create an aged look on the
door. Handmade wainscot panels line the walls, capped by
various moldings. The upper beams are tied to the wainscot by
fluted columns, which are integrated into both the wainscot and
the beams.
The wide door and low threshold allow access to all, and
the lowered dimmable switches are within everyone’s reach.
Additional canned lighting is accented by an antique chandelier,
as well as lamps on the end tables.
