After seeing so many media rooms in an area Tour of Homes, these homeowners decided to add one to their home using the attic space over the garage. Recessed storage space in the garage became the location of a spiral staircase leading to the media room. A closet in the recessed area, which originally had the water heater, that was moved and replaced with a tankless water heater, was going to just be used as transitional space but instead became a wine cellar.

Although relocating the AC ducts, plumbing, whole-house vacuum systems and electrical systems were all challenges, the biggest one was the original plan for the stairs—to frame the stairs out of wood—wasn’t possible because of the sloping roof line in the attic. Instead, a spiral staircase was used and fabricated with a 12-inch center post to allow for wider steps.

This lower level was remodeled to create a home theater, bar, kitchen and dining space. Twin columns were used at the entrance to frame the home theater space and set it off from the rest of the lower level—and also to hide a support column. The walls, ceiling and ductwork were treated with sound-dampening mass-loaded vinyl. The state-of-the-art media system’s audio/ video components are hidden behind one of the custom-built wall panels, and a wireless home control system connects the lighting, video and sound with one-button touch.
