The main goal for this homeowner was to
gain more useable space in the 1970s
galley kitchen and make it safe and
accessible for a person with special
needs. The kitchen was originally placed
at the end of the home, but with this new
design, the kitchen is opened and
surrounded by the formal dining room,
front foyer, living room and outdoor space
of the home.
Because the garage was not square to
the rest of the home, there was 75 square
feet of space available to be used for
expanding the kitchen. However, the wall
between the kitchen and garage was
originally supporting the roof, and the
living room on the other side of the
kitchen had a large vaulted ceiling.
Heavy beam work was used to support
the roof and ceiling system, but it was
concealed above the newly raised
ceiling—so the homeowner had a clear
line of sight from one room to the next.

The extra space from the garage was
used to put in a cooktop area, a desk
area and a mud room entry from the
garage. Six-inch oak grid frames the
18x18 inch multicolored stone patterned
tiles that are laid on a 45 degree angle to
the room.
Eighteen recessed mini-can lights light
the room, with the help of under cabinet
lighting, hanging pendants and wall
sconces.
