RESIDENTIAL KITCHEN
$60,001 to $100,000
Custom Design & Build Inc.
Ann Arbor, Mich.

These homeowners loved to cook and
entertain, and their kitchen didn’t have
enough space for dual chefs. Also, there
was a bottleneck when they entertained.
There was limited visual access to the
Japanese gardens and grilling area.
In addition, the appliances were not
adequate for gourmet cooking.
To solve many of these problems, a
galley layout was created that contained
two separate zones, one for the guests
and one for the cooks. The new island is
the centerpiece of the home. The
island’s stone and steel bar top required
structural engineering—special joinery
slots and fasteners were used to
stabilize the materials.
Several walls were eliminated at the
living room and dining room to frame
long views to existing interior and
exterior space, and underutilized areas
were used to expand the kitchen’s
footprint.
A connection was made to the exterior
of the house through the use of natural
materials being used in the kitchen,
including bamboo. Other materials, such
as river rock, steel and handmade
pewter hardware, are some of the
details that add visual interest in this room.
