This building, built in 1889 by one of the
city’s founding fathers, has seen it all:
commercial, retail and professional
businesses. The third floor—the space
the clients wanted converted into their
home as a three to four bedroom loft—
most recently was home to a fraternal
order and a ballet school. During demolition, 30 large Dumpsters were filled
with debris as the space was gutted
back to its quartzite exterior walls and
layer upon layer of ceiling was removed.
Also discovered were 16-foot arch
windows that now provide a view of a
revitalized downtown area. And all of
this was done while business was being
conducted in the two occupied floors
below.

Other treasures from this building’s past
were recovered, including the original
cornice from an old vault, which was
made into the mantle of the fireplace in
the library, and the 120-year-old maple
floor was restored in several rooms. The
kitchen features a tin tile ceiling that
mimics the original in the building.
Because this building was so old and
had been out of use, the electrical and
mechanical systems were updated.
