The fireplace in this townhome was a
36-inch gas firebox that couldn’t burn
wood and was surrounded by 8-foot
bookcases. This remodeler was challenged to create a dramatic modern-looking fireplace using maple wood
veneer finishes the clients selected for
the face of the fireplace.
The first thing chosen was the
eco-friendly fireplace, which burns
denatured ethanol, classified as
biodegradable. It also was UL approved
and contained within a “burner kit,”
which could be dropped safely into any
design. The granite hearth surrounding
this kit floats across the floor supported
by steel in the wall and stainless steel
columns. Carpenters installed stainless
steel surrounds next to the Sheetrock
and bands between the veneer panels,
cutting angles in the steel and veneer—
sometimes as high up as 18 feet. Glass
display shelves attached using stainless
steel rings that are designed to look like
nuts used in mechanical instruments top
off this eye-catching display.
