Because of the historical significance of
the area, the Historical Preservation
Board, the Fine Arts Commission, the
Advisory Neighborhood Commission and
the District of Columbia all had to give its
stamp of approval before exterior work
could move forward. To that end, the remodelers submitted all paperwork and
drawings for the interior work permits—
over which the various review boards
had no jurisdiction—in order to start
work on the interior structural changes.

The rear yard, which was overgrown
and included a crumbling brick patio,
was regraded, and a two-level lawn was
put in place, with a bluestone upper
terrace and stair system leading to the
open lower lawn. On the inside, to
create the boxed stair system the client
envisioned—and ensuring code restrictions were met—an LVL-based system
was used, creating a floating cantilevered stair and landing on the first
flight of stairs and a split landing on the
second flight leading to the third floor.
An elevator also was added to allow the
owners to stay in the home even if they
lose mobility.
