In addition to the budget constraints, the
additional challenges of this project
were the horizontal and vertical beams
and soffits that made the kitchen feel
segmented. The vertical beams—and
the walls running parallel to them—
were taken out while the horizontal
beams were elevated and concealed.
The soffits were taken out of the range
wall to create height in the room. This
also allowed for larger cabinets. The
homeowner also complained about a
lack of counterspace, so a window in
the corner was filled in and the refrigerator moved down to the corner, which
added 3 feet of counter space. Recessed
incandescent lighting was added to the
room, as well as low voltage task
lighting above the sink and an energy-efficient pendant above the dining room
table.
Other project details include reconfiguring the countertops to 36 inches high,
which added another 6. 5 square feet of
counterspace, centering the existing
range and hood on the wall to achieve
symmetry and leveling the floor, which
was severely slanted in some places.
Cork was used in the flooring for its
sustainability, as was the manmade
quartz countertop. The wainscoting was
removed to achieve a contemporary
look. To stay within budget, the client
chose to use the existing appliances.
