This 1,200-square-foot lakeside residence
originally was built by the owner to be a
vacation house, with the owner doing
the construction; therefore, the walls
were not plumb, rooms were not square
and the wiring and plumbing was
dangerous. The stair stringers varied as
much as 1⁄
2 inch on the risers and a 1⁄
4 inch
from across the stringers, so they were
rebuilt using three 2x12-inchers, and the
interior of the closet below it was double
rocked to meet fire code.

The original structure also didn’t take
into account the home’s relationship to
the lake, so the owners wanted to open
the view from the kitchen, as well as
create more space in the kitchen to
address counter space issues. To do
this, cabinet accessories, such as
rollouts, lazy Susans, pot and pan storage
and a mixer lift, were put into place, and
dead space around the pantry and
refrigerator were filled.

The sink was improperly vented and
floor joists had been drilled within a 1⁄
2
inch of the bottom to run the drain and
water lines, so new joists had to be
sistered across to an interior wall in the
lower level and then drilled properly.
